Captain William L. Straley, II of Campbellsville, son of the late William Leo Straley, Sr and Geneva French Straley, was born on March 23, 1924 in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He died at 11:01 P.M., Thursday, March 9, 2017 in Louisville. Age: 92
William was a captain in the US Merchant Marines for nearly 50 years and was employed by ExxonMobil and the American Maritime Officer’s Union. As a US Merchant Mariner he earned veteran status for his service in the US Merchant Fleet during World War II. During that time he survived a German U-boat attack that sunk the ship he was serving on in the South Atlantic Ocean.
Besides his wife, Genrose Straley of Campbellsville, he is survived by two daughters and two sons: Jennifer Rattliff and husband, James, Gayle Feldman and Jeffrey Straley and wife, Deborah of Campbellsville and John Straley and wife, Barb of Lexington; nine grandchildren: LeAnn Stanfield Straley, Justin Rattliff, Olivia Rattliff, Chase Feldman and wife, Terrah and Samantha Willis of Campbellsville, Richie Deener of Louisville, Jonathan Straley, Laura Straley and Clint Durham of Lexington and many other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by a son, William L. Straley, III and a brother, J.T. Straley.
